Community Involvement 2004 - 2005

Vocation Education Committee:
Members of the community, business people, and local high school career advisors make up the KYDS’ Vocation Education Committee. The Committee sponsors field trips to the NASCAR Career Fair, Edward Davis Police Academy, Elysian Park Police Academy, Canoga Park Fire Department, West Valley Occupational Center; walking tours of downtown Los Angeles, and educational tours of universities and community colleges. These field trips expose at-risk students to different types of career and education paths as well as positive lifestyles. The Committee plans the annual Career Day.

Community Art Projects:
KYDS receives private grants to fund community mural projects, youth-driven video projects, CDs of spoken-word poetry and other artistic endeavors.

Sites: All current schools sites and recreation centers.

Volunteer Program:
KYDS offers volunteer opportunities for adults and teens in all programs and administrative offices. KYDS works with career counselors at local high schools and volunteer centers and offers service-learning credits. Volunteers are carefully screened and trained and go through the same hiring and training process as regular employees. Volunteers are encouraged to apply for paid employment once they have competed the volunteer program.
