History:
Keep Youth Doing Something
(KYDS), was established in 1991 as a community-based effort to
reclaim a city park that had fallen victim to drug and gang-related
problems.
With the help of community leaders, local LAPD police officers,
and a Los Angeles City Councilperson, KYDS succeeded in cleaning
up the park and establishing a Friday night coed sports league.
KYDS has grown into a multi-million dollar organization.
KYDS
offers culturally relevant programming that is tailored to children's
interests and development stages as well as the needs and desires
of parents, schools and communities.
The development and implementation of the KYDS' programming is
initially based on the written survey feedback of students, parents
and teachers about children's interests and needs. Participants
continue their involvement in program planning through a rotating
"advisory group" of youth expressing ideas and offering
feedback.
KYDS'
programs focus on the need for all children and youth to play,
explore, create, learn new skills and relax. KYDS' programs offer
a wide variety of structured activities that are fun and interactive
and that help children develop or enhance leadership and social
skills, self-esteem, conflict resolution abilities, academic skills,
and new interests and hobbies.
Programming includes opportunities for children to participate
in group projects, special-interest clubs, outdoor sports and
recreation, tutoring and mentoring, homework help, field trips,
and community service projects.
