Beyond
the Bell Program
KYDS receives funding from the
Los Angeles Unified School District, Beyond the Bell Branch, to
provide after school programs at local and elementary middle schools
from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. each school day. The programs offer
tutoring, homework support, academic enrichment, special interest
clubs, field trips, family literacy, and indoor and outdoor recreation
and sports, in a safe, supervised environment. The schools are
located in economically disadvantaged areas with high transient
population rates. All activities and clubs are designed to enhance
vocabulary, listening skills and oral communication skills.
After
school programs include:
-
Academic
Support: Homework and skill-building activities that help students
improve their academic skills, particularly in reading and math,
and apply themselves in school; activities include homework
support and learning games.
-
Outdoor Recreation: KYDS offers a choice of organized sports and
games.
- Special
Interest Clubs: children can choose to be a member of a club that
meets weekly for a set number of weeks. Clubs include computers,
art, music, dance, drama, reading, public speaking / debate, science,
environment and more.
- Reading
Time: students choose a book and participate in quiet reading.
- Field
Trips: children plan and participate in simple neighborhood field
trips as well as more elaborate field trips requiring special
transportation, planning and chaperones. Examples of field trip
destinations: children's museum, art museum, parks, zoos, food
pantry, nursing homes, local hospitals and historical sites.
- Service-Learning
Projects: children plan and participate in service projects on
a regular basis.
